At Breadless, we believe in fueling not just bodies but also dreams, businesses, and communities. This Women’s History Month, we’re honored to celebrate and spotlight five remarkable women who are shaping Detroit through wellness, storytelling, coffee, and culinary creativity.
These leaders have turned their passions into thriving businesses, creating spaces where other women can feel empowered, supported, and inspired.
Each of these women is a testament to resilience, vision, and the power to carve out spaces for others to thrive.
Read on to learn more about their journeys, challenges, and the advice they have for aspiring entrepreneurs.
📍 @theicecreamdetroit
Ysahai of Ice Cream Detroit turned her passion for food into a thriving business that brings joy to the community. From crafting bold, handcrafted flavors to creating an inviting, nostalgic experience, her shop is a celebration of community, creativity, and connection.
Like many entrepreneurs, Ysahai faced challenges in opening her business—from dealing with contractors to navigating city regulations. But she turned obstacles into opportunities, learning the skills necessary to bring her vision to life.
Her biggest advice? Trust your vision, adapt to challenges, and surround yourself with a supportive community.
💡 “Ice cream has the power to transport people back to happy memories—creating those moments for others is what makes it all worthwhile.”
📍 @detroitwritingroom
Stephanie Steinberg, founder of The Detroit Writing Room, believes in the power of storytelling to create change, inspire action, and preserve history. She draws inspiration from Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters, women who paved the way for female authors in publishing.
As a journalist and author, Stephanie has used her writing to shed light on critical issues, such as the childcare shortage in Detroit. Through The Detroit Writing Room, she encourages women to document their journeys, amplify their voices, and ensure their stories are not lost through time.
💡 “If you are a woman and have a story to tell, write it down. Your voice matters.”
For the founders of Welcome Home Yoga and Wellness, yoga is more than just movement—it’s a tool for empowerment, mindfulness, and connection. Inspired by Brené Brown and Jessamyn Stanley, they built a wellness space where women of all backgrounds can embrace vulnerability, strength, and healing.
One of their defining moments came during the pandemic, when they created an online practice space, bringing a sense of community and resilience to uncertain times. They emphasize the importance of inclusivity, mentorship, and fostering wellness spaces that cater to all women, regardless of background or ability.
💡 “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” — Oprah Winfrey
📍 @ileraapothecary
Chinonye, founder of ILERA Apothecary, is on a mission to redefine beauty through clean, plant-based skincare. Inspired by pioneers like Rihanna, Alli Webb, and Jane Wurwand, she has built a brand that prioritizes inclusivity, transparency, and sustainability.
ILERA Apothecary not only offers high-quality skincare but also empowers women through education, ethical sourcing, and community engagement. Chinonye is an advocate for supporting women globally, ensuring that the supply chain for her ingredients uplifts women-led cooperatives, particularly in Africa.
💡 “Entrepreneurship is not easy—embrace the ebbs and flows, believe in your mission, and keep pushing forward.”
📍 @theredhookcoffee
When Sandy opened Red Hook Coffee, she envisioned more than just a coffee shop—she wanted to create a community hub. Inspired by her love of Detroit and the culture of third-wave coffee, she built a space where people connect over great coffee and conversation.
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, she’s had to navigate challenges like proving herself to lenders, contractors, and coffee partners. But she didn’t let roadblocks stop her. Instead, she created a workplace that uplifts women, prioritizing flexible schedules and leadership opportunities.
💡 “If someone tries to be a stumbling block, step over them. There’s always another way forward.”
Each of these women has transformed their industry, whether through wellness, beauty, storytelling, food, or tech. Their journeys remind us that women’s leadership is essential—not just for business, but for creating inclusive, supportive spaces where future generations can thrive.
At Breadless, we’re committed to fueling these dreams. We believe in celebrating, supporting, and amplifying the voices of women who are changing the game. This Women’s History Month, let’s continue to uplift and invest in women-owned businesses, creators, and visionaries.
